Discover Ghana with ICALLAS 2026

As part of the 7th International Conference on Afro-Hispanic, Luso-Brazilian, and Latin American Studies (ICALLAS 2026), participants are invited to immerse themselves in Ghana’s rich cultural and historical heritage through specially curated pre- and post-conference excursions.

These activities are designed to complement the conference theme, “Transatlantic Pathways: Culture, Politics, and Knowledge Between Africa and Latin America”, by offering participants a first-hand encounter with the spaces that shaped Africa’s shared global story.

Welcome to Accra!

Accra, Ghana’s bustling capital, takes its name from the Akan word “Nkran”, meaning “ants.” The name is believed to have arisen from the Akan people’s observation of the early Ga settlers, whose great numbers and movements across the land resembled swarming ants.

Today, the city stands as one of the most dynamic and vibrant places in the world — a lively blend of cultures, rich history, music, cuisine, and renowned educational institutions. For those yet to visit Africa, Accra offers the perfect introduction to the continent’s remarkable spirit and its warm, diverse people.
